Historical Archive of Italian Economists
Starting and reference point for the search of the Emilia-Romagna group are the lists of the economic writers who lived in the two regions. On the basis of these lists, a search will take place in order to explore their funds, and to detect manuscripts, letters, and other archival materials. These lists are compiled and continuously updated using specific literature and other sources. The main bibliographic reference about manuscripts held by Italian libraries is the impressive work of G. Mazzatinti, Gli archivi della storia d'Italia (Cappelli, 4 voll., 1899-1906). This work present an author index, and sometimes a subject index, that allow a search by relevant names. Moreover, the book of S. Samek Ludovici (ed.), Le biblioteche dell'Emilia. Storia, patrimonio, attivitą (Modena, 1959), is specifically addressed to a part of the region. Other information about economists of Emilia-Romagna until the 1850s are available in A. Graziani, Gli scrittori emiliano romagnoli di economia fino al 1848 (Modena, Soliani, 1893). References on economic writers who taught or studied at the University of Bologna are available in Giancarlo Gozzi and Roberto Scazzieri, Economics at Bologna. Studies in the History of Economic Theory (Bologna, 1988). Studies about Tullio Martello archive come from the work of Silvia Lolli, Tullio Martello, 1841-1918 , (Bologna, 1992-93); and from P.L. Porta and R. Scazzieri, Produzione, ricchezza e struttura delle azioni umane. Percorsi della teoria economica da Tullio Martello a Gustavo del Vecchio (SIE 1996). Information about the agrarian economist Serpieri are available in the proceedings of the conference on "Arrigo Serpieri e la sua costruzione teorica fra economia politica e realtą settoriale", Florence, 22-23 april 1993. At the moment, the activity of the Emilia-Romagna regional group deals with the testing of the software "CLIO", on the basis of uniform rules, centrally established, for the input of data. The goal of this part of the job is to make uniform, at national level, the activity of data input. From the start of the central database at the Societą Italiana degli Economisti in Ancona, the local groups will begin to input the data in this database. About data retrieving on local institutions, the first task for the Emilia-Romagna group will be the filling of the CLIO forms with the information on Angelo Marescotti papers at the library of Lugo di Romagna. Afterwords, it will be the input of the fund of Gasparo Scaruffi at the Archivio di Stato of Reggio Emilia, and that of Agostino Paradisi at the Biblioteca Estense and Universitaria in Modena. The group has also identified in Emilia-Romagna the following materials of interest for our search: Pasquale Boninsegni papers at the Biblioteca Gambalunghiana in Rimini; Marco Minghetti documents at Biblioteca dell'Archiginnasio in Bologna; C. A. Broggia manuscripts at the Biblioteca Universitaria in Bologna. Further searches will be needed for other funds and manuscripts, especially for Ugo Rabbeno, an economist of Reggio Emilia who left his library at the Faculty of Law of the University of Modena; for the agrarian economists Brizzi, Serpieri and Tassinari at the libraries of agriculture faculties in Bologna and Piacenza, and for the manuscripts of Melchiorre Gioja in Piacenza. A long list of economic writers and economists who studied or taught at the University of Bologna has been prepared, and it will be a useful path for the searching of manuscripts, papers, documents, letters, lessons and so on; we could remember Berardi, Bresciani Turroni, De Crescenzi, Del Vecchio, Flora, Gini, Gratianus, Graziadei, Irnerius, Loria, Marescotti, Minghetti, Montanari, Nazzani, Ortes, Pacioli, Puviani, Ricci, Rossi Pellegrino, Salvioni, Sensini, Valeriani, Vasco, Vinci, Vita, Zanotti, Zorli. Moreover, the group will hold a conference, involving regional scholars, librarians and archivists, about "The Archives of the Economists in Emilia Romagna", in order to spread information on existing archives. |
